Bollywood is now a serious rival of Hollywood and over 1 billion people in the world are fan of Bollywood movies. Bollywood has a number of actresses and they are very famous for their beauty. Here, I have made a list of 10 great bollywood actresses of the present time. All of them are like demi goddesses to their fans and some of them are considered to be hot sex symbols. In my list, I have tried to make a balance of beauty, acting talent and sex symbols. I know some great names have been left out and I have nothing to say except, “Sorry for that.”

Preity Zinta:

This beautiful looking girl with her dimples and innocent smile won hearts of millions through ads like Perk and Liril. Preity started her career as a model. Her performance in the Liril caught the attention of Shekhar Kapur. The director signed her up with Hrithik Roshan in a movie titled “Tara ram Pum Pum.” However, the movie was never made. Later, she got the chance to work in a small role in famous south Indian director Mani Ratnam’s movie “Dil Se.” Her first movie was “Kya Kehna” which was the surprise hit of 2000. In this movie, she played the character of a small town girl, “Priya,” who falls in love with a rich boy, Rahul. The two eventually involve into physical relationship and she gets pregnant. When she tells Rahul about the child, he gets cold feet. Despite getting pressure from her family, friends, she decides to keep the baby. The mental strength of the girl to hold on to her decisions going against the social norms was the main strength of the character and Preity played her part very successfully.

Rani Mukherjee

Born into a film family Rani Mukherjee got her first film offer after finishing her high school. She started with Bengali movie “Biyer Phool.” Her first Hindi movie was “Raja Ki Ayegi Barat” released in 1996. In this movie her co actor was Shadaab Khan, son of another great actor Amjad Khan. The film did not do well but Rani’s performance caught the Bollywood directors’ and producers’ attention. Then she appeared with Amir Khan in “Ghulam.” The movie was a big hit and changed Rani’s luck. That same year, she worked in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.” The director, Karan Johar was new. In this movie Rani worked in a small role. The film also had Kajol, Rani’s cousin. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” was the biggest hit of 1998. Rani’s performance in the movie won her Filmfare Award in the best supporting actress category. Since then Rani Mukherjee did not have to look back. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Sathiya, Chalte Chalte, Veer-Zara, Hum Tum, Black, Bunty aur Babli, Yuva turned her into one of the most famous actresses of Bollywood.

Kajol

Kajol Devgan is Rani Mukherjee’s cousin and shares the same lineage. Her mother Tanuja is a successful actress. Her cousins: Rani mukherjee, Sharbani mukherjee, Mohnish Behl are all professional actors. Her paternal grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee was a great film director. Born in a family of acting Kajol got her first movie in 1992. The movie “Bekhudi” did not do well in the box office. In 1993, she paired up with Shahrukh Khan in “Baazigaar.” The movie was a big hit. Kajol and Shahrukh khan paired up in five movies including Baazigaar: Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. All these movies were very successful. The year 1998 was the luckiest year for Kajol. Four of her movies: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Pyar to Hona Hi Tha, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Dushman did great business in box office.

Kareena Kapoor

She is the younger sister of Karishma Kapoor and one of the most promising actresses at present day Bollywood. In Bollywood the “Kapoor” family is highly respected. Before Kareena, her sister Karisma Kapoor was one of the top actresses of Bollywood. Kareena was planning to study Law in Harvard but some how by bad/good fortune she landed into film. Her first movie “Refugee” was released in 2000. In this movie she starred with Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. The movie did not do well but Kareena kept on getting offers from good directors. Today, Kareena like her sister is one of the best actresses in Bollywood.

Isha Koppikar

Unlike Kareena, Kajol, Karishma, Ishaa Koppikar comes from a family of academicians. She studied in Life Sciences in Ramnarain Ruia College in Mumbai. While she was in college she worked in an ad with Gautam Rajadhyaksha. She also participated in the Miss India Contest in 1995 and won the Miss Talent Crown. After that she modeled for L'Oreal, Rexona, Camay, Tips & Toes and Coca-Cola. Her film career started as an item girl in “Company.” The song “Khallas” in which she worked as an item girl was big hit and made her famous overnight. She then worked in another item song in “Kaante” in 2002. Her first movie Ek Tha Dil Ek Thi Dhadkan in 1997 has not been released yet.

Urmila Matondkar

Born in 1974 Urmila started her career as a child actress. Her first film was “Kalyug” in 1980. In 1983, she starred in “Masoom” where her co star was Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah. The movie was very successful and her performance was praised both by the film critiques and audience. As an adult actress she made her debut in N. Chandra's “Narasimha.” In 1992, she acted in Chamatkar with a new comer named Shahrukh Khan. The four years, from 1991 to 1995 was Urmila’s struggling period. Other actresses like Monisha Koirala, Raveena Tandon and others were ruling Bollywood. In 1995, “Rangeela” turned her into a Bollywood sex symbol over night. The movie directed by Ram Gopal Varma, had famous actors like Amir Khan and Jackie Shroff. The music by A.R. Rahman was a big hit. Dress designer Manish Malhotra transformed Urmila into a sex bomb.

Manisha Koirala

Like the Bachchans and Kapoors, the Koirala family is one of the most influential political families in Nepal and Manisha Koirala comes from this family. Her two great uncles and grandfather served as the Prime Minister of Nepal. Manisha studied in Army Public School in New Delhi. She is an accomplished Bharatnatyam and Manipur dancer. Manisha’s first movie was Nepali, Pheri Bhetaula (We shall meet again). It was released in 1989. In 1991, her first Hindi movie Saudagar was released. Directed by Subhash Ghai the movie did not do very well in the box office. Her major success came after 1942: A Love story. Set in the time of British Raj this about the love story of two people Narendra Singh (Anil Kapoor) and Rajeshwari Pathak (Manisha Koirala).

Tabbu

Like Kareena and Kajol, Rani, Tabu also came from a family of film actress. Her real name is Tabassum Hashmi. Her aunt is one of the most famous actresses of India, Shabana Azmi. Her sister Farha was also very popular but she could not handle her career properly. Tabbu came into film after Farha retired. Her first movie was “Prem” with Sanjay Kapoor. The movie was not well received by the audience. However, Tabbu was determined. Her hardwork paid up after he signed up with Ajay Devgan in “Vijay Path” in 1994. The song of the film “Ruk Ruk Ruk” sung by Alisha Chinoi with Tabbu’s dance performance turned him into a Bollywood heartthrob. Twice she has won the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Bipasha Basu

This supermodel turned actor is one of the most fortunate women’s of Bollywood. WHY? Because, she is girl friend to one of the most good looking fellows in Indian cinema at present; John Abraham. Like Kareena, Bipasha’s entrance into acting world was by accident. She was planning to study in medical. Bipasha was born in New Delhi and then moved to Kolkata. When she was a child she was considered to be an ugly girl. Things started to change for this ugly girl after she won the Ford Supermodel of the World contest at seventeen years of age. She then got into modeling. Her first movie came out in 2001 “Ajnabee.” The movie was fairly successful. Her performance in “Jism” turned Bipasha into Bollywood sex symbol. Her latest film “Dhoom 2” is a big hit in the box office.

Bhumika Chawla

What sets Bhumika apart from other actresses is her warm looking face and homely smile. Youngest daughter of an army officer, from child hood Bhumika went to different places in India. Her favorite travel destination is Hill Station. She started her career as a model. She moved to Mumbai in 1997 and started doing ad films and music videos. Till now, she has done more than fifteen ad films and the most successful among them was the Ponds Powder campaign. As an actress she first starred in a Telugu film “Yuvakudu” in 2000.
