Germany: Bollywood’s Next Big Market?

Bollywood movies have become very popular in USA and UK. Now, it is the time of German people to embrace Bollywood Movies. And they are becoming interested too. Bollywood movies and Bollywood stars are becoming familiar names and faces in Germany slowly. Yes, perhaps much slowly compared to UK and USA but Germany is turning into a Bollywood market after all.

Times of India wrote:

Imagine a 3,000 large crowd, enthusiastically dancing and singing along with K3G's 'Shava, Shava'. This isn't deja vu from Indian cities five years ago; nor is it the scene of a lavish NRI wedding in London.

This crowd of people is mostly tall, blonde-haired, light-eyed and often unable to pronounce the words it sings. This scene was, of all places, at the Internationales Congress Centrum arena in Berlin last week during the show 'Bharati'.

The sudden popularity of Bollywood in Germany is unbelievable. In the last few months, two major Bollywood-inspired shows, 'Bharati' and 'Bollywood: Das Musical', have been touring Germany from Mannheim to Munich and running to packed halls. A major German cable TV channel, RTL, often shows Bollywood movies dubbed in German.

Bollywood themed parties and clubs are all the rage amongst Berlin's youth. An Indian person I know was once greeted by weeping German teenaged girls, much to his bewilderment and his wife's displeasure.

So, imagine that after 2 years, Bollywood movies become very popular in Germany. It will surely bring more foreign currency to Bollywood producers and Indian government. No one would mind for having some extra euros from Germany, isn’t it?

I was in Vienna Austria, at a nightclub packed with Austrian/German/Swiss 20 somethings. In the middle of a massive house music set, "It's the time to Disco" from Kal Ho Na Ho, was played. The crowd went ballistic and me being the only person of Indian descent in there I was bumrushed by like six chicks.
