The movie is based on a ture story of a Punjabi housewife Kiranjit Ahluwalia (played by Aishwarya Rai), who resided in England with her two children as well as his husband, Deepak Ahluwalia. Kiranjit was abused by her husband many times since they got married. Having tolerated continuous torture for years, Kiranjit set fire to her sleeping husband and murdered him. Being accused of a murder, British law sentenced her to lifetime imprisonment. In jail, she met Veronica Scott, her fellow cellmate. One night, she threw petrol on him as he slept and lit a match. He died of burns six days later, but not before implicating Kiranjit for murder.
