Shah Rukh Khan: Devdas and Rising on the Peak of the Mountain

After Baadshah he appeared in some of the hit movies including ‘Mohabbatein’ in 2000 and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ in 2001 which was the last movie of Kajol-Shah Rukh pair till now. For both the movies he was nominated for Filmfare best Actor award.

However, as an actor Shah Rukh’s potential best-flourished through the movie ‘Devdas’. The movie ‘Devdas’ gave helped hah Rukh to reach in a distinct place as an actor where he is unique. Actually it was his last leaf to be a legend in the history of Bollywood. Yes it is true that he is still acting and he can present many hit movies but his acting in Devdas was something that one can do once or at least twice in his/her life.

Devdas was directed by famous director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and based on the famous Bengali novel Devdas written by legendary Bengali writer Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the movie, Shah Rukh acted against two most talented actresses Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. It is all about a tragic love story. Devdas is the youngest son of Zamisdar Sir Narayan Mukherjee who is knighted by the British Government. Devdas went to London in order to study law. After coming back to home he falls in love with Paro (played by Aishwarya Rai) who was his childhood pal. It is also expected by everyone that this couple will soon marry. However, Devdas’s sister-in-law Kumud told Devdas’s mother Kaushalya that the forth father of Paro’s mother Sumitra was dancers and then Kaushalya rejected Sumitra’s proposal and insulted her publicly. Then Pao’s mother Sumitra told Devdas’s mother that she will find more richer husband for Paro within one week otherwise she will suicide. Eventually Paro married to a widowed person of forty-year-old.

After that Devdas addicted to alcohol and goes regularly to a brother with his friend Chunni Babu where he meets with the kind hearted dancer Chandramukhi who fall in love with Devdas. His health starts going down as he becomes more addicted to alcohol and Chandramukhi meet with Paro to save Devdas but nobody can save him. Once Devdas gave word to Paro that before his death he will go to her house and at the end of the movie it is seen that this tragic hero went to the doorstep of Paro’s house but can not meet with her as he dies.

The movie Devdas got ten Filmfare Award including the Best Actor for Shah Rukh Khan, Best Actress Aishwarya Rai and Best Supporting Actress Madhuri Dixit. The movie went for Oscar in the foreign film category in 2003 from India but could not be successful. The movie was also showed in the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. The movie was the highest expensive movie at that time as it costs $22.3 million. Now the movie is second highest as Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is reported to be the highest expensive movie in Bollywood.

After Devdas Shah Rukh has been widely known actor from Bollywood and since then he is still presenting super hit movies. In 2003 he acted in ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ which was nominated for FIlmfare Best Actor award. However, in 2004, he acted in three super hit movies such as Main Hoo Na, Veer-Zaara and Swades for which he got the Filmfare Best Actor award. In 2005, his movie Pehli was nominated for Oscar competition from India in foreign movie category. Another notable work of Shah Rukh in 2005 was his acting in a documentary named ‘The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan’ on himself. The documentary is made by Nasreen Munni Kabir who is a British film maker.

In 2006, King Khan came up with two hit movies- multi stared ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ and ‘Don-The Chase Begins Again’ which is a remake of Bollywood movie Don made in 1978 and acted by Amitabh Bachchan at the title role. In the movie Shah Rukh Khan played the leading role of Don.
